United Airlines rules for transportation of cremated remains

(Please contact the airline as rules and regulations often change)
  • United Airlines accepts cremains as carry-on or checked baggage provided, they can pass x-ray scanners, and clear explosive trace detection. You also must have a cremation certificate from a funeral home or crematorium.
  • Travelers are allowed to travel with cremains in a checked bag, however it is recommended to do so in a carry-on bag to help protect the contents from the risks associated with checked baggage.
  • The urn should be made of non-metallic, scannable material that can easily be X-rayed during security checks. Some of the recommended materials include wood, non-lead lined ceramics, plastic, biodegradable material like paper, and glass.
  • TSA-approved cremation urns must meet certain size and material requirements. Typically, urns must be smaller than 7.4 x 5.5 x 9.5 inches (or 18.8 x 14 x 24.1 centimeters) to qualify for carry-on baggage. This size limitation ensures that the urns can fit within the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you
